On the initiative of TVVL, VCCN, ISSO and Binnenklimaat Nederland, the Ventilation Master Plan was developed: practical tools and other resources that help professionals improve ventilation in office buildings, school buildings and nursing homes. Part of these tools is the Air Cleaning Guideline for Pathogen Reduction.
Ventilation is the basis of a healthy indoor environment and is therefore also essential for limiting pathogen transmission. The ventilation required to reduce chances of infection depends in particular on the infectivity of the pathogen. Reducing the probability of infection may require more ventilation than the requirements of the 2012 Building Code. Many indoor spaces equipped with some form of ventilation in accordance with the applicable building regulations (or worse) may therefore have insufficient ventilation capacity to adequately reduce the probability of infection.
This requires adapting or increasing ventilation capacity. It will not always be possible to cost-effectively and sustainably adapt or increase the capacity of the ventilation system. Nevertheless, there is a course of action: supplement ventilation with air cleaning techniques. This guideline provides objective information on the application of air cleaning techniques.
