What is an air curtain?

An air curtain is a ventilation system designed to separate spaces with different climates. It enhances comfort and serves as a natural barrier against insects. It also blocks dust, leaves, and street debris from entering. Additionally, it prevents harmful air from infiltrating and helps save energy.

In summer, it keeps cool air inside, while in winter, it keeps cold air out. Air curtains are cost-effective if the door is opened more than four times or if the temperature difference exceeds 4º Celsius.

How does an air curtain work?

An air curtain consists of a fan, a heat exchanger, and a discharge grille. Warm air is drawn in and blown downward, creating an invisible barrier that separates the indoor and outdoor climates.

In the upper part of the doorway, warm air escapes, while in the lower part, cold air enters. To prevent cold drafts and properly warm the air, the airflow should extend all the way to the floor.

The best result

An air curtain performs best when installed directly above or against the doorway. This helps prevent energy loss. Ensure that the distance between the air curtain and the floor is minimal, and that the airflow is at least as wide as the doorway.

When purchasing an air curtain, consider several factors: choose a model suitable for the space, and pay attention to its power, dimensions, and whether it offers built-in or add-on features. Seek professional advice beforehand to make an informed decision.

Current legislation

Various air technology devices, including air curtains, qualify for the Energy investment allowance (EIA). Through this scheme, the tax authorities partially subsidise the purchase of air technology equipment for your business. This includes air curtains used in conditioned transport.

Tools

Two practical tools are available for air curtains. The performance and energy efficiency of an air curtain heavily depend on its installation. The Air Curtain Entrance Check allows you to assess both new and existing installations.

Using the results, you can optimise your air curtain’s performance. Additionally, the Savings Meter lets you calculate how much energy and money you can save with an air curtain.

Maintenance

Regularly clean the grilles of the air curtain. While doing so, check that the unit can freely intake and discharge air. To ensure optimal performance, inspect the air curtain regularly and test its energy efficiency.
